Exquisite Corpse Soundscape Critiques

Mike

I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of your soundscape, the way you edited the sounds together gave the scape a strong atmosphere. I think the sounds at the end were a bit choppy/intense and didn't mesh well with the beginning. When listening to your piece, I felt wistful and adventurous.

Rob

I liked how atmospheric your soundscape was, the sound clips you edited together did a good job at portraying emotion. One possible suggestion I have is to add on more effects to some of the sound clips so they stand out from one another. I felt unnerved and uneasy when listening.

Alki

I liked how full your sound was, that there was always something new that I could pick up on the more I listened; no dead space. I think your work could have been slightly improved if you used a wider variety of sound clips. Your soundscape felt unique because it simultaneously made me feel whimsical and unnerving.

Jeremy

One of your biggest strengths was the large variety of sound clips you chose and how you pulled them all together, none of the sounds feeling too repetitive. However, I felt like some sounds didn't necessarily fit in with the others (like the crying baby or people talking) which pulled me out of the scene at time. Your soundscape made me feel anxious, but curious.

Cal

I liked how you used a wide variety of effects on your clips, like the echo effect on the crying baby sound, which gave the scape a haunting atmosphere. I felt like the "climax" was a little too long, and would have been more impactful if we had more build up to it. At times, your scape made me feel overwhelmed, at other times, I just felt calm or curious.

Julia

I liked the sounds you chose and how you worked them all together; they all followed a broad theme and gave the scape a sense of narrative. I felt like there could have been a clearer climax and resolution to the scape, the ending felt a bit abrupt. At first, your scape made me feel innocent, then tired and overwhelmed.

Hannah

I like the ending of your scape because it's aesthetically very different to the beginning, but still compliments it. In the beginning, I feel like you could have had a greater variety of sound clips to open up your scape. While listening, I went from feeling peaceful, to stressed, then peaceful again.

Caden

Some of the sounds you picked/edited made me feel unnerved while listening, which must mean you were effective at eliciting a response from the listener! At certain points, the volume levels are a bit too high to discern between the layers of sound you used. I felt anxious and unsettled while listening.

Garret

I loved how you used a mix of echos and crisp sounds, the juxtaposition gave your piece a unique experience. Around the time of the climax, the volume levels are a bit high and distract from the sounds themselves. Your scape made me feel stressed and overworked.

Tasia

I liked how you used different effects such as echo to diversify the sounds within your scape. One small thing I noticed was that some audio clips could have been faded in/out better. When listening to your scape, I felt monotonous and tired.

Brendan

I thought you had a nice progression of sounds throughout your piece, which gave it a good flow and a sense of narration. I also felt like you could have has a stronger climax to pull different sound elements together. Some of the things I felt while listening were silliness and fun.

Jordan

I liked how you used a lot of different types of sounds throughout the scape, which gave it a sense of a journey, moving from one point to another. I felt like the ending was a bit abrupt and could have been drawn out a little longer. While listening, I felt like I was on an emotional journey, moving from fun and whimsical to uncomfortable and unsettled.

Jake

I liked how clearly you gave your piece a psychedelic atmosphere and how you integrated dialogue into the scape. The editing was good, but there were a few spots where I feel you could have transitioned the audio clips in and out cleaner. When listening, I felt fun and nonsensical.

Maggie

I liked your diversity of sound in the beginning of the piece, which all flowed well together and gave the piece heightened energy. I feel like you could have used more diversity in the middle of your piece, as the snow crunching felt repetitive at a certain point. Your scape made me feel energized, then curious, then stressed out.

Anjali

I think you do a very good job at putting us in the scene of a coffeeshop; all the sounds you picked and edited together were perfect for the setting you portrayed. However, I never got a sense of narrative from the piece, as there was no clear progression, no beginning, middle, and end. When listening, I felt calm and relaxed, like I was sitting at a coffeeshop in the afternoon.

Dzifah

I think you had a great mix of sounds, as they all came together to put us in a grounded scene. I felt like the beginning had a lot of clips that went on too long, which made it feel slow and monotonous. I felt calm and monotonous at the beginning, then stressed out by the end.

Michael

One thing I loved about your piece was the juxtaposition between the calming music and stressful noises. I felt like there were a few clips that were abrupt and could have been faded in/out more smoothly. Mainly, I felt stressed when listening to the scape, but there were some subtle moments of calm.

Gavin

I liked how atmospheric your piece was, how the sounds and effects transferred you into the soundscape. In the middle portion of the scape, I feel you could have used more diversity in sounds. This piece gave me a casual, calm feeling that occurs when you're outside taking a walk.

Jacob

I think you did a great job of editing everyday effects to make them sound unusual and unsettling (like the airport announcement voice). I felt like there were a few clips that could have been transitioned in/out more smoothly. Your scape was very fun and engaging, it never felt stale.

Sarah O.

The piece has a really good narrative, I especially like the "fuzzy" sounding audio that have off a sense of confusion. I felt like the weakest part of the piece was the middle section, which could have used more of a diversity in sound clips. I felt lost, uneasy, and quiet when listening to this soundscape.

Calvin

I liked how you layered many different audio clips together at once, without the simultaneous clips feeling crowded or hard to decipher. This layering is strongest at the beginning, but I felt the middle could have been more engaging. I felt unsettled, but also engaged when listening to your piece.

Alan

I especially liked the beginning of your piece; it was unsettling, but immediately brings you into the soundscape. A few of the audio clips I felt could have blended together clearer. I felt anxious and unsettled when listening to this soundscape.
