The character of Lola Lipski first came to me when I put my music library on shuffle and the first song that played was "Monster" by Dodie. The song is about looking into the eyes of someone who hates you. Their expression is so filled with disgust that you become convinced that you have suddenly grown horns. I couldn't help but think: "What if you saw that expression every time you looked in the mirror?"
I used this exhibition to figure out who Lola is. To understand how a seemingly self-assured cool girl could hold herself in such contempt. What I found was an insecure woman who knows how to hide her ugly emotions with a beautiful mask.
A standoffish cat person who would rather brand herself with "bitch" than let anyone see the real her.
A drama queen who lights a fire to distract herself from the dark clouds above.
A troubled soul who hates herself more than she deserves.
My exhibition asks you to look beyond the surface and examine what most people would try to hide. To embrace the darkness underneath. To let it bring you some light.
